Let me tell you a quick story.
A business owner—we’ll call her Jess, although that’s not her name—starts blogging for her interior design business. She’s got passion. She’s got ideas. She’s got coffee-fueled ambition and a Canva Pro subscription.
She writes a few posts, shares them on social, and watches the likes trickle in. Nice, right? She gets a few encouraging comments from friends. She even gets a share from her aunt who doesn’t totally understand what she does but is very supportive.
Then?
Crickets.
No new leads. No DMs. No clients booked.
So Jess does what most of us do—she Googles “how to get more traffic to your blog” and starts stress-posting on LinkedIn, all while wondering if she should’ve just gone back to her old job that didn’t pay well (but at least paid consistently).
Here’s the thing: it’s not that she’s not posting enough. It’s not that she’s not giving enough value. It’s not that she doesn’t understand her audience well enough.
It comes down to her strategy. Or—let’s be honest here—her lack of strategy.
Content marketing isn’t supposed to go out and just look pretty. It’s supposed to bring in leads. But it can only do that if it’s part of a system that connects the dots between “here’s something useful” and “here’s how we work together.”. It can’t stand on its own.
Too often, we treat content like it’s the end goal. (“Just post consistently!” and “Just add value!”)
But the truth is, if you’re not leading people somewhere—even if that “somewhere” isn’t a sale, but a conversation, a download, or a follow-up—you’re just giving away your best stuff for free and hoping someone will send you a thank you card.
I tell this story because this is a story I hear every week. Probably more like every day. Most people just give up getting anything from their marketing and focus instead on referrals, word of mouth, and networking. And that’s great, because if those work for you, they work for you! But… and here’s the big “but” that I want to stress… Your business probably won’t be able to scale drastically beyond the startup stage if you aren’t making your marketing work for you.
The good news is that content marketing that actually converts is not a myth. It’s not a case of, “Well, it works for that business but not for mine.” It just involves incorporating a simple formula that takes people from interest to action.
Let’s look at how it works.
Give People a Path to Walk and They’ll Walk It
Ever been lost on a trail? I have. It was early spring in Bragg Creek, and I brought my brand new puppy, Milo, to this area with a ton of beautiful walking trails in the foothills. We were clipping along having a great time on this long, winding trail until… I lost the path. I missed one sign—just one sign!—and that was it. After 10 minutes of thinking I was making my way back to the path, I was suddenly hiking through waist-deep snow with Milo clutched against my chest. I hoped I was getting close to the trail again, but that little panicked part of me wondered if my roommates would have to call the Bragg Creek rescue services when I didn’t arrive home for dinner.
Obviously, we made it out. But from then on, we stuck to the short, well-marked trails that had plenty of maps and wouldn’t let my wandering mind take me down some random offshoot trail heading deep into the unknown.
Marketing is so often like this path. You get someone interested enough to start down it, but then you lose them. They just vanish from the trail. And instead of having some kind of signposts to guide them back to the path, they’re just gone into the void.
You can create the best post, reel, blog, or video in your niche, but if it’s not connected to a larger plan that nudges people toward specific and guided action, it’s like building a gorgeous treehouse in the middle of a forest and forgetting to tell anyone where it is.
People genuinely want to visit your super cool treehouse. They just don’t know it’s there. And once they do, they don’t know how to get there. Or what to bring with them. Or whether it’s worth the $20 it will cost them to go. Or whether they’re going to get stuck in the forest and never make their way back out.
This is the role your content marketing plays. It’s not just about promotion—it’s about wayfinding. Give people a clear roadmap in your marketing and then walk the path beside them. Don’t just point in the direction of the path you’ve carved and then let them get lost along the way.
So… Why Isn’t Your Content Converting?
Let’s break it down. Most content fails to convert because of one (or more) of these culprits:
1. There’s No Clear Next Step
People are interested—but they don’t know what to do next. Should they follow you? Download something? Reach out? Join your newsletter? If you don’t tell them, they won’t act.
Every piece of content should have one clear “what now?”—even if it’s as small as reading a related post or answering a question in the comments.
2. It’s Not Aligned With What You Actually Offer
Ever posted content that got tons of attention… but none of it from people who would ever buy from you? That’s because the topic might be helpful, but it’s not strategically aligned with your business goals.
Start by reverse-engineering. What do you want people to eventually buy or do? Now build content that warms them up to that.
3. You’re Letting AI Do All the Thinking
Listen—we love AI. It’s fast. It’s efficient. It can take a messy brain dump and turn it into a solid outline in five seconds flat.
But here’s what AI can’t do: create a guided path that connects the dots across your content. It can’t tell stories the way you do. It can’t create emotional hooks the way you do. It can’t lead someone down a path and keep them moving just out of sheer curiosity about what’s around the next bend.
Use AI to speed up the execution—but not the thinking. That part’s all you. (Or us, if you want help.)
So… What’s a Small Biz Owner to Do?
You’ve got a business to run. You don’t have time (or desire) to become a full-time marketing strategist, social media expert, and content planner with a minor in psychological persuasion.
You don’t have to.
We built the Lean Marketing Lab for people like Jess—and maybe you. Entrepreneurs who are tired of waiting to see if their content marketing will ever convert. People who want a system that actually works—but doesn’t require 47 tools, a $12k agency, 30 uninterrupted days to work on it, or a PhD in marketing.
Here’s how it works:
- You get a plug-and-play system you can customize to your business (we’ve done the hard part for you).
- You benefit from monthly coaching to get support, feedback, and guidance that fits your business.
